Does guardtop contain coal tar?

GuardTop® sealcoat products have always been, and will always be, completely free of coal tar and harmful PAH. Products are made from 100 percent asphalt base stock and are environmentally sustainable. GuardTop is a safer and cleaner alternative to harmful, toxic sealcoat products that contain coal tar or other dangerous additives.

How many plies of coal tar pitch are there?

Typical coal tar pitch built-up roofs have four or five plies. At the end of the installation, gravel is typically set into an additional surface layer of hot liquid coal tar pitch (called a flood coat). The gravel surface provides fire-resistance and protects the coal tar pitch membrane from UV rays, foot traffic, and hail damage.

What is the mechanism of action of coal tar?

The exact mechanism of action is unknown. Coal tar is a complex mixture of phenols, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and heterocyclic compounds. It is a keratolytic agent, which reduces the growth rate of skin cells and softens the skin's keratin. Coal tar is produced through thermal destruction ( pyrolysis) of coal.

What are the benefits of coal tar?

It demonstrates antifungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-itch, and antiparasitic properties. Coal tar was discovered around 1665 and used for medical purposes as early as the 1800s. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, the most effective and safe medicines needed in a health system.
