This replaces the dopamine deficiency experienced during nicotine withdrawal (nicotine causes a release of dopamine which enhances the pleasure-seeking pathways in the brain; reducing nicotine intake means these pathways are no longer being stimulated; bupropion counteracts this effect).

Is the food effect of bupropion clinically significant?

The food effect is not considered clinically significant. In vitro tests show that Bupropion is 84% bound to human plasma proteins at concentrations up to 200 mcg/mL.
